Computer recycling
Find out about the WEEE directive, which aims to cut down on landfill by boosting recycling of computer and other electrical goods. (WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.) From 2007, producers will be responsible for financing, collecting and recycling old computer equipment. Printer ink cartridges don't fall into this category, but other computer bits and pieces do.

Printer cartridge facts
Around 25 million homes in the UK contain at least one computer and most of these homes own a printer.

The average household uses about three inkjet cartridges each year.

Around 65 million printer cartridges are sold in the UK. Currently only 15% of these are recycled.

The other 85% go to landfill sites, and since a typical cartridge is made of materials that can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, they will sit there for a long time.

Remanufactured printer cartridges made from recycled cartridges can cost as little as 10% of the cost of a new cartridge.

So – if you recycle your cartridges and buy remanufactured ones, you are reducing the harmful effect on the environment.
